Time is right once again for the annual Whale Shark festival. However, this year’s festival is special in more ways than one. The Maldives Whale Shark Research Program (MWSRP) has been carrying out these festivals for the past two years. This year, however, LUX* Maldives who had previously helped to conduct the festival  has decided to sponsor the festival scheduled for the 29th of August. LUX* Maldives hopes to give the locals a week of festive celebrations and raising awareness about the conservation of marine diversity of the Maldives.

The Whale Sharks are present in the Marine Protected Area of the South Ari Atoll throughout the year, making the area exceptionally special and attractive to thousands of tourists who fly in every year to swim with these mighty beasts. This year, the Whale Shark festival will once again see a number of colorful sea-creature sculptures put on display alongside and family scavenger hunt and a painting competition.

The festival is expected to be attended by various Maldivian artists, including the renowned Maldivian singer Unoosha as a guest of honor as one of the three judges of the festival. She will also perform in the festival’s finale. But what makes this year’s festival so special is that this year’s festival will take place during the same weekend as the International Whale Shark Day. To all the curious souls out there, this is definitely a good opportunity to see nature’s majesty up close in person!
